Gallery

Gary Millard has included a Gallery below for many of his popular painting subjects. Of all the Galleries below, Plein Air is his most favorite. Painting in the outdoors is inspiring and sometimes refreshing. Naturally illuminated subjects that incorporate the shadows and highlights are equally important in his paintings. Hope you enjoy the selections put in each Gallery.

Plein Air Paintings Gallery

Plein Air

Plein Air is a French expression which means “in the open air” and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors, which is also called peinture sur le motif (“painting of the object(s) or what the eye actually sees”) in French. Most Plein Air paintings I do, are completed using Oil Paints.
OK… for those of us that just want to know what Plein Air is (pronounced plane air), it is painting in the open air (meaning in the – rain, snow, summer’s heat, winters bitterest cold, and don’t forget with everyone’s friends, the mosquitoes ūüôā ). Each of these Plein Air Paintings are “normally” completed in one sitting. Some Plein Air paintings are the quick sketch or the idea for a larger piece that would be painted in the studio. From this Plein Air piece the artist can capture the feeling, inspiration and the essence that caught one’s eye in the first place.
