My painting career and history – not just going through the motions.

Well, we all have to start somewhere.
1984 Â
I chose MATC  (Milwaukee Area Technical College)  to start my art experience from the ground up.  Well after the 2 (night) class, everyone seemed to be off to the races painting their brains away with no direction. I was the student, that apparently drained the life blood from her,  only because I was a true beginner, in every sense of the word.  Everyone was painting away making happy clouds and working with multi mediums and here’s Gary, wondering what brush to use and how come painting was so expensive, because she was not teaching mixing your own paints/colors, but, buying the tubes with the colors you wanted in your painting…… seemed logical enough to me at the time.  Well after this 2nd class, my instructor in her compassion for the world of art, told me to find another hobby, that I was just not getting it….
Ok I got it… I quit painting all together.  The painting to the left is my first attempt at acrylic painting and was  absolutely my first painting ever.  This is the painting that I spent 2 days/classes on trying to get the clouds in the sky.  OK , like a said, we all have those looking back - a-ha moments that make you wonder. In the next 19 years I only painted ONE painting, it wasn’t until I met James Hempel, that I figured it was time. My experience at the Milwaukee Area Technical College was now a distant memory and time to revive my dream of learning how to paint !!

1985
The painting of the White tail deer to the left was my 2nd painting ever – Â 1 year after my first attempt… Â this would be the last painting I would paint for 18Â years.
Well almost anyway,  I tried to paint a mural on my garage door…..  hay don’t laugh, at the time I thought is was cool  🙂   It was a seascape, that lasted for a while then I attempted to paint a pack of wolves on the same door years later…  I was probably the only one that appreciated it …  that attempt was also painted over.  I now have plain boring garage door like everyone else……

2003 – James Hempel – Fine Artist and an exceptional Mentor
James was the first “real” Artist Mentor. Â I took my first night class with James in his studio, back in September of 2003. Â I showed up with new tubes of paint, new brushes and a great attitude.
I remembered James first instructions were to squeeze my acrylic colors on my palette. Â My first thought – looking back, was all 50+ colors I had brought with me? Â Â James was as patient as he is genuine. Â These first few weeks lessons with James set the stage for my career as an artist.
I took weekly lessons with James for about 1 year.  In that one year, the seed was planted.  I had to paint, I wanted to paint. I was horrible at it, but still wanted to learn.  So begins my journey.

2003 -Â John Seerey Lester and Artist wife Suzie , both John and Suzie are incredible Fine Artists
John held a class in his home for artists. Â I had only a couple of paintings under my belt, even though each one was a struggle. Â I had a couple of night classes with James Hempel, Â heck I was ready!!
Wow, Â I must say spending 5 days in John and Suzies home painting and watching them paint, I was hooked. Â I knew that when I grew up I wanted to be an artist and paint wildlife like John and Suzie. Â Â I have included few pictures from John’s class. Â I have continued to run into John and Suzie from time to time at events and workshops. Â They both are incredible artists and solidified my need to paint. Â It was only thru their patience and “constant” encouragement that I focused on what I needed to understand about the world as an artist.
What was one of the things that John taught me…. was his use of acrylics and oils, this made me take the venture into using both not just one or the other. But, the one “real” life lesson that I have used in almost every painting I done in nature is “Stuff”.  John told me many times Ok you don’t have to paint each blade of grass.  Just put in some “Stuff”.  Wow, sounded simple but many years later and I am still trying to perfect the “Stuff” in my paintings of nature.
Stuff:  the illusion of grass, twigs, leaves, rocks, dirt….. you know, stuff!  :)        Thanks John! and Thank you Suzie for the book ” My Painting is Done, now what do I do?” by Suzie Seerey -Lester.
So begins my journey …

2004 – Beartooth School consisting of the following fine Artist: Â Â
Daniel Smith, Paco Young, John Bannovich, Mathew Hiller and Terry Issac
Imagine being a kid in a candy store with no parents and you could eat all the candy you wanted.   That is exactly what this class was to me as a beginning artist.  Live and breath art 24/7 for the 5 day class.  One of the best part of this class was the small class sizes that we were in that rotated throughout the day between the artists and Q&A sessions.  It was an awesome experience (one of those dream come true/once in a lifetime events – is what I am talking about here 🙂   ).  Each Artist shared his individual processes for painting.  Wow,  I find it hard to tell you that being surrounded by incredible Artists and painting with them, truly set the hook in me to fulfill my desire to paint.
My journey continues…
Below are the website links, to these fantastic Wildlife Artists for your viewing pleasure,  you will see what I mean about the candy.  If you appreciate pictures of wildlife in various sizes, styles and shapes, then you found a gold mine here!   ENJOY!

Julie Jeppsen – June 2006 SKB (Susan K. Black – Workshop, Dubois, Wyoming)
Julie Jeppsen is an incredible artist that taught me about grays.  Yes, grays,  until I met her at this workshop (SKB – Susan K. Black, Dubois, Wyoming) I never considered the thought of using gray mixtures in my paintings.  Julie took the time to explain in great detail, how to mix them and use them, in our paintings.  The use of grays also created a more unified and natural looking painting.  Julie Jeppsen is known for her paintings combining realism and atmosphere of wild animals in landscape. Julie is a self-taught artist, whose subject matter is a wide range of animals.  For a treat in wildlife are visit Julie Jeppsen’s Website .

2017 – Lindsey Kustusch
Lindsey’s Workshops I attended in 2017 and another in March of 2019 in San Francisco, California
I took a workshop form Lindsey to learn how to paint with an abstract flare. Well Lindsey, is as genuine as they come. A true artist and professional who’s teaching methods made me leave the workshop with a new vision!! Lindsey’s husband Nate is also and artist!
I learned not to be afraid of messing up !! Her technique added a new dimension to my previous state of mind, that my paintings had to be as exact and photographic as possible (even though I was still trying to achieve that vision).  I left Lindsey’s workshop in San Francisco, California with allot of encouragement to think outside the box.
Thank You Lindsey for your patience and professional approach to learning…. soooooooo much appreciated!

2021 Shana Levenson/Kassan -Â Shana’s Workshop was May of 2021 in Albuquerque, New Mexico
Well what can I say…  This was an awesome change of pace for me…  I wanted to learn how to paint “Lace”.  Shana explained her process, demonstrated it, and I thought OK I got it ……  Ha, just shows that it was her talent and oh so integrate attention to detail that made it look easy, It sooooo wasn’t.  For the 3 day workshop I gained the confidence to not only paint “Lace” on the human form but also, leaned a hard lesson to slow down and make every brush stoke count.  Thanks Shana, your talent and professional method of painting advanced my thinking and gave me the tools to not hesitate to pursue painting Lace !!!

Frankie Johnson, Master Artist, Owner of Mainstreet Gallery, Lake Zurich, Illinois – USA
with Gary Millard
Frankie Johnson – January 2025 to Present!
Frankie is one of the most incredible and talented Artist I have had the pleasure to meet and have as a mentor.  As an artist I didn’t know what I didn’t know until I met Frankie.  I realized immediately upon seeing her work I needed to get out of my rut and learn a completely new style of painting.  I used to mainly do a monochrome under painting (called a grisaille – pronounced “gris I”) and then Glazed many, many coats of transparent paint over the underpainting to get a rich painting with depth.  Always waited for the under layer to dry before proceeding.  Well Frankie’s style is painting direct color over color and “NOT” waiting for each layer to dry.  So long story short, I fell in love with the “Freshness” of her painting style and so, my next journey has begun.  I paint 2 days a week at her School/gallery under her direction. I now am working with a completely “fresh” new mindset!  Incredible women, and exception artist and consider myself fortunate to be able to be mentored by her…..

Frankie’s Husband Jay Johnson is also an artist. Jay’s work can be seen on this link https://mainstreetartcenter.com/gallery/artists/johnson_j/johnson_j.htm
Other Mentors that had an influence along my Journey!!

Carl Brenders
Spent allot of time with this Incredible Artist. Carl’s process to painting was an inspiration to me in my beginning years of Painting. I also sat in on a Lecture he gave at the Wildlife Museum in Jacksonhole, Wyoming and was captivated by his technical approach to each painting.

2006 – Rock Newcomb and Susan Labouri’s workshop
Rock Newcomb’s layered acrylic paintings explore prehistoric artifacts and Western wildlife with luminous depth and refined technique. Â
Guess who introduced me to “Scratch Board” painting !!! Yes Rock was the first to teach me what scratch board painting was about. Rock’s work in this area was intense!! Rock also encouraged us in his workshop with Susan Labouri.
Rock Newcomb is represented by Legacy Gallery. The link to Rocks work is http://www.legaceygallery.com

Jane Jone – I took a workshop from Jane in Northern Wisconsin in 2007
Boy… guess who introduced me to ‘Glazing’.   Never glazed over a painted surface before her.  This bowl of fruit among others was a real “Glazing” experience.  Many multiple coats of Transparent Oil paint went into this piece.  Jane also taught painting Glass Vases with flowers in them.  I can tell you glazing changed the way I paint and continue to use that technique to the present day !! Thanks Jane…. this workshop opened up just how to create depth and luminosity in my paintings !!

Andrew Denman and Gary Millard 2006 at SKB workshop in Dubois, Wyoming
Andrew introduced me to TEXTURE underpainting…. Yes, Andrew taught us how to apply texture (in most cases GESSO) to the canvas/board prior to painting.  Unique and pretty inventive way to paint. Below is the painting I created during his workshop.  It is hard to tell from the photo but the stump that the racoon is on was completely textured with Gesso and the transparent glazing of color over the top of the texture.

Greg Beecham
What Can I Say … the time I spent on several occasions with Greg was inspirational !!  Greg showed me not to be afraid to use paint….  not pussy foot around the painting … but apply paint/texture that make a painting come alive !!  I had spent time at Greg’s studio a few times as well as watching his demo’s and technique of painting at several SKB workshops in Dubois, Wyoming.
